Loadshedding & VoIP

Your cloud phones need two things to work: power and internet. Loadshedding kills both. Here's how to keep your business connected through every stage.

The Problem

When stage 6 hits and you're on battery backup, your fibre ONT dies (no power), your router dies, and your desk phones go silent. Even with a UPS on the router, most offices get 30-60 minutes max. Then everything goes dark.

The Solution: Layered Backup

You need three layers to stay connected through extended outages:

Layer 1

UPS for Router + ONT

Keeps fibre alive for 1-2 hours. Minimum 1500VA for most home/office setups.

Layer 2

LTE/5G Backup Link

When fibre dies completely, your phones switch to cellular. Dual-WAN failover handles this automatically.

Layer 3

Mobile App Fallback

If the office is completely dark, staff can answer calls on their手机 via the VoIP mobile app. Calls keep coming in.

UPS Sizing Guide

Don't guess — calculate what you actually need:

Equipment Typical Watts Runtime on 1500VA
Fibre ONT 12-18W ~4 hours
Router (business) 20-40W ~2.5 hours
PoE switch (8-port) 60-120W ~1 hour
IP desk phone 5-12W each ~5 hours

Tip: A 1500VA UPS covering router + ONT + 1 phone gives you roughly 2-3 hours of connectivity. For full office coverage, you need 3000VA+.
